Easy Bedroom Updates {Vintage Style}

I am still in the process of a bedroom redecorating project, but here's a little peak at my progress.

This little makeover began with a rail from an old church. We had just put a king-size bed in the room and the old queen-size headboard wasn't going to work. When I saw the beautiful carvings on this piece I knew it would work well as a headboard. It was been painted... twice. First black... the color it remained for about a year, and then a very light beige-gray (because that's the two old wall colors I mixed to come up with enough paint for it!) as I decided I wanted to lighten up the room. I added a brown glaze to shab it up a bit and really show off the details. The photo below is of one of the sides.

Next came the vintage wall chandelier. Usually I am on the lookout for hanging chandeliers, but this one caught my eye as being quite unique and perfect to hang above my bed.

The final touch came from Home Goods. The neutral gray color and satin finish along with the tufting on this comforter and pillow set was perfect for the glamorous look I was going for!

The throw pillow was actually from another room. I wanted something to top it off and thought it would do. Can't beat shopping your house for accessories!

The next project will be painting the room. It's due for another update and it is definitely going to be a little lighter and kept neutral. Or... maybe I could put a dark color on the bed wall to accent it....???? Decisions, decisions!

Painting Furniture: Bench goes from Drab to Fab!

Painting thrift shop furniture is always rewarding. The transformation from beast to beauty is usually pretty easy and the dramatic results quite surprising.

Benches are always valuable furniture pieces. They can be used as extra seating, a place to perch a pretty tray or to hold a suitcase for visiting guests.

This plain organ bench has been sitting in an extra bedroom in my house for almost a year. It's been functioning as a place to hold extra blankets. With the weather being so warm the last few weeks, I decided to spent some time indoors painting (after I took the bench outside to give it a light sanding and snap a photo for you!)

Step One.... lightly sand by hand outside.

Step Two... vacuum with brush attachment to get all the dust off before bringing it inside to paint.

Although it's sad seat was upholstered in a mousey brown fabric, the legs had some nice lines and detail and being an organ bench, it had the added feature of storage under the hinged seat.

Step Three... Remove padded seat with a screwdriver.

Step Four... select (or mix your own) paint color.

Tired of the growing stack of random paint colors accumulating in my basement, I have been mixing them into off-white paint to come up with some unique pale shades that seem to move easily into any room. This mixture was a combination of off-white, dark gray and taupe. I mix up the colors in plastic tubs and usually end up mixing them together to make sure I have enough paint for a new piece. It's kind of fun to see the results and definitely better than drying out and dumping old paint in the garbage and then buying more!

Step Five... Cover with a quick coat of primer to cover any stains and give the paint a good surface to adhere to.

Step Six... Top coat with your paint color. I use a foam roller for both the primer and the top coat. The paint goes on fast and smooth. If I need to get into a crevice, I always have a brush handy.

A piece of painted furniture is never complete in my eye until it receives some antiquing glaze. I had been using Ralph Lauren Tobacco glaze the last few years but have been unable to find it in my local stores. I decided to (once again) hit my paint stash for an old can of clear glaze and mix up my own recipe to replace it! I'm really happy with the results and in fact, I like it better than Ralph Lauren's glaze.

Step Seven: Brush or roll on a quick coat of glaze. With my own glaze recipe, I found I didn't need to use as much or cover the surface completely.

Step Eight: Wipe off the glaze with a damp rag. I usually have about three rags handy for each glaze project. As they get covered with glaze during the wipe off process I move onto another rag. Wipe off as much as you like for the antiquing effect. You can always add more glaze later if you like. If it's a tabletop, sometimes I top it with a satin clearcoat for extra protection against watermarks. I don't do this for the sides or legs of a piece. That's it... you're done!

The glaze brings out all the pretty details in the wood like carving and curves that the eye might miss if they weren't highlighted with the dark accent.

I topped the bench with a piece of brown and beige zebra print fabric from Jo-Ann's to really jazz it up. I don't go too crazy with reupholstering details... I just wrap the fabric around the old cushion and use a staple gun to secure it.

Right now it is sitting in my living room and functions as an extra seat and just plain cute accent piece of furniture. Even though the fabric is bold in pattern, the colors are quite neutral so it will be easy to move the bench from room to room in my house.

There's lots of talk about milk paint these days and avoiding the sanding and priming. I have tried it and it did not cover stains well so I ended up priming the piece after a coat of paint. I also found I needed two coats of paint anyway on most pieces and I preferred the protection of the primer rather than the surprise of a stain showing through. I do love many of the makeovers I've seen with milk paint, but I am content to use up the latex paint I have on hand for now before spending $25 on a quart of milk paint.

Have a great weekend and may your next painted furniture project bring you smiles for years to come!

Painting Vinyl, Sideboard & Kitchen Makeovers & Lemon Cake {Share the Love Wednesday Link Party}

Welcome to Share the Love Wednesday, a link party where you can share your ideas with other creative bloggers from all over. Link up makeovers, crafts, recipes and more. We love to discover new blogs and great ideas from those who link up every week. There are so many great ideas it's like getting a brand new issue of your favorite magazine with one click! Here are some of my favorites from last week...

See the inspiration, before and after over at Meg and Mums for this beautiful sideboard makeover pictured below. Can you believe it was dark red in the "before" picture? There's lots of details including the paint colors and a special touch to the inside of the drawers you'll want to check out.

See every little detail of a gorgeous kitchen makeover from Kelly at Eclectically Vintage. This built-in pantry with pull out drawers and top glass shelves is one of my favorite features but there really are so many great ideas here. A white marble island, vintage displays and more await those who visit her blog.

Sometimes all it takes is a beautiful photo to make me want to try a recipe. Look at this gorgeous creation from April at Whatever is Lovely for this beautiful lemon cake. The frosting is plentiful... just how I like it!

I learned something new from Tammi at Seventh House this week. You can paint vinyl. In fact, there's even paint specifically for doing so! How many ugly vinyl pieces of furniture have I seen that this would have been perfect for? Here's the after... click over to her site for the before and all the "how to" details.

Link up your posts below and be sure to grab a party button from my sidebar so others can join the fun. Click around to see some of the great ideas and meet some new friends. As always, thanks for linking up!

Painting Vintage Books {Why Not?}

Once I have the paintbrush out and in use, everything is fair game. I'm currently painting a dining room set and as I was working on yet another curvy leg of a dining chair my thoughts drifted to a a small stack of books I picked up at the library's used book store.

I have a lot of vintage books... my favorite are the textured cloth covers. Some are pretty, some are not. Some I buy for the color, some for the title, some for their yellowed pages, some for the illustrations.

I picked up this particular book just because it was bound in cloth and cheap, and the pages were kind of yellow. It was my chance to experiment with painting books! Since I had the creamy white paint out and the brush and roller wet, I went to work.

I did put a coat of primer/sealer on it, only because I had it out for my other project and thought it might speed things along. I followed with two coats of paint (applied with a foam roller). Easy project!

I shopped my bin of Valentine bits and bobs to find something to top this project off with...

A sweet glittered garland will do!

Brass into Silver, Heirloom Ornaments a Beautiful New Year's Card & Share the Love Wednesday!

Welcome to Share the Love Wednesday! Thanks to all of you who linked up last week... let's get right down to some fabulous features from last week's participants!

I've often seen a great metal piece at the thrift store that has great lines, etc... but was discouraged from buying it because of the finish. Check out this makeover of a dingy brass tray into this gorgeous silver tray! See the before picture and the details on the paint used over at Home Sweet Homeade!

This next project is from Alice and Bridget. It's a gorgeous collection of ornaments with sweet crochet wrappers made by her grandmother. Not only is it pretty, the story tugs at my heartstrings. How often do we put our hearts into crafts and hope that the person we gift it to treasures it forever? Grandma would be so proud to see how very loved these ornaments are! The display is perfect for this type of collection.

Before you know it the new year will be upon us. If you have some time before it hits, this sweet tag from Lori Hairston would be the perfect inspiration to get you paper crafting! She suggested lots of uses for the tag, including a tag to attach to a bottle of wine as a hostess gift! See it and so many other beautiful projects over at Choux Choux!

I love finding fabulous features each week! Grab a feature button ladies...

Enjoying the {Halloween} Backyard View

I have a little table on top of my backyard deck. It's a favorite spot to sit and enjoy the yard, but I also enjoy decorating it for the seasons with something simple.

This year it's a clay jack-o-lantern all dressed up with a new coat of paint. It used to be a bronze color, but it became chipped and definitely needed a makeover. I used the same process I use on much of my furniture, a quick sanding on the rough spots, a coat of primer and some ivory paint with tobacco glaze to shab it up a bit. A coat of satin polyurethane should help this new finish withstand the weather.

It's just a simple addition to brighten up my view from the kitchen for Halloween. Do you ever decorate in the back yard?

As usual, Marley is wary of any newcomers, including clay pumpkins!

Painting Brass Vintage Deer with Chalk Paint & Share the Love Link Party #16!

I used Chalk Paint to transform this pretty thrifted deer from it's original brass finish. I bought this piece from a thrift store on one of my golden retriever rescue trips. I've seen a bit of an antler trend in interior design over the last year and thought this would be a fun way to bring this element into my home.

In the past, it would have been an item to use spray paint on, but since I was testing out the chalk paint on my vintage suitcases, I figured I would give it a try on something metal.

I did absolutely no preparatory steps on this before painting. It was pretty clean and I simply brushed on the paint with a bristle brush. The paint went on really nicely. Many times when painting small decorative pieces I find I use too heavy of a hand with the spray paint and get drips here and there. The chalk paint went on very smooth and did not build up in the details at all. It definitely did require two coats of the paint though. I have yet to use this paint and be pleased with one coat coverage. I tried this paint on vintage suitcases and also needed two coats. Check out that post for more information on using this paint.

The finish is a very flat. It's almost like looking at a piece of chalk--that's the final look you'll get. I decided not to add any wax or poly finish to this; I like the smooth matte look. For painting brass, I'd have to give the Annie Sloane Chalk Paint two thumbs up! I'll let you know how the plain chalk finish stands up to time.

Just for grins, here's a picture of another brass piece I painted previously with spray paint next to the deer with the chalk paint. Click here for the full post on this tri-level piece.  I like both finishes, but sometimes I get tired of waiting for the perfect spray painting weather (most definitely too hot and humid for that today!) and the resulting fumes and smell. You can see how the spray paint piece is much smoother--no brush marks.

Before we get started on this week's link up, I'd love to spotlight a few links from the last party.

The first shout-out goes to the first link up! I love vintage furniture, and this makeover by Mr & Mrs. Frugal Face is truly beautiful! I love the way she restored the hardware and the gorgeous color and glaze!

This beautiful kitchen below from Tenth Avenue South caught my eye as well. The whole effect is subdued, elegant and pristine. I love the counter tops and that faucet {definitely visit her blog and check out the closeup of it's detail}.... talk about fabulous design! The only items on the counters are functional or truly beautiful. I love the tray of Pellegrino and flowers--what a nice touch! There's even a recipe as framed art in a great looking wall display! I love beautiful, well-designed details... and this kitchen is full of them!

Liz over at Brambleberry Cottage brought her beautiful photography to the party {really the post looks like a professional stylist!}. This sweet drink is served in fabulous style and wait until you see the other photos of this post featuring her cherry picking adventures. Bright red cherries in vintage this and that... it's delicious!

One more pretty post to spotlight... who could resist this beautiful pergola! A Few Pennies has the perfect spot to sit with a cool drink or a good book. She has the furniture and potted plants placed just so... this really is a beautiful outdoor space. The construction of this pretty garden element doesn't look too difficult to copy either! Click on over and visit her to get the full effect.

Let's get this week's party started! I'm looking forward to seeing what you all have been up to. Thanks to all of you who linked up last time. I can't wait to see what fabulous projects and ideas this week will bring.

Two easy requests...

  • Please link just one specific post you want to feature, not your whole blog (to do this, click on the title of the post you want to link and it will open on it's own page, then copy that url
